Patriotic Baby Blanket

A patriotic baby blanket is what I have been working on lately.  I have 3 skeins of Red Heart's Stars and Stripes yarn that I didn't know what to do with so I figured that something small like a baby blanket would work.  I'm hoping I will have enough yarn to finish. I'm using the One Skein Baby Blanket  pattern.  I'm using smaller skeins that almost equal a One Pounder like the pattern suggests.  Now my husband looked at me strangely when I showed him what I was making but I figure that living on a military base there has to be at least one person out there that would love a red, white, and blue baby afghan.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments you have left on my blog.  It's reassuring to know there are still wonderful people out there in the world.  Lately,  I've been so frustrated with some of the people in this community.  I guess I took it for granted that if you are in adult you act like one.  Maybe I'm just lucky that all of the people I know back home treat others with respect and are kind, wonderful people.  I'm just not used to being around people that are so unhappy with their lives that all they want to do is sit around and gossip about others.  I hope in Hawaii things will be a little different and we will have the opportunity to meet more people that aren't in the military.  For me, I just don't think it's mentally healthy to only be around the people you work with all the time.  For civilians, can you imagine working and then having to go home and always be surrounded by your coworkers?  Yes, they don't live inside your house but you will see them all the time wherever you go on base.  Have you figured out why my husband and I like to get out and travel as much as possible?

Alright enough of my pity party.  I just needed to vent my frustrations.

  1. When my husband and I were stationed in Hawaii in the late 80s and early 90s we had a blast. We didn't get around too many civilians though. Most of us lived in military housing and because the islands are so small we had many, many cookouts, and other things we did together like bowling leagues, camping, playing baseball etc... We were a very close-knit group back then. I miss those days and hope you have the great experience we had.

    1. Thank you, I'm hoping we will like it too. I think we are going to try for off post housing only because we did on post housing here in Germany and while the convenience of being on base is nice sometimes people act a little too crazy for our liking.

    1. Thank you! Usually I have a pretty good attitude about military life but for some reason life here has been bugging me lately. I feel better now that I vented and am ready for my family to come and visit us this summer.

  4. I love your blanket, I made some patriotic dungarees at the weekend and they have turned out really cute I haven't blogged about them yet but if a little one wore my pants and sat on your blanket they would disappear lol

  5. Hi Katie,
I discovered and joined your blog today. Your generous spirit impresses me. We moved a lot growing up and I know how hard that can be. Try to stay positive but know it's always OK to vent sometimes.
Cute blanket! I love the colors.

  7. Where ever you live it always comes down to what you and your neighbors make of it. You can't change them, but you can find other ways of dealing with it and treasure the few that are kind until you have the chance to move. One benefit of the military is when you have bad neighbors, you know you or they will eventually move. In this housing market, many people are financially trapped near neighbors and it is hard to get away from the dangerous ones. We finally lost one to divorce. What we couldn't accomplish in the real estate market, the divorce court took care of bringing us a wonderful young couple.

I hope your next placement is a better, happier assignment for both of you. Maybe this time you will have some pleasant neighbors and some activities of interest.

    1. Thanks Bailey! You are definitely right about never being in one place for too long because of the military. I'm just glad I have met a few wonderful people here that I will definitely remain in contact with after we leave.

    1. Thanks! I finished the main part of the blanket and was happy that I had enough yarn. I just need to figure out what to do for the border since I may or may not follow the pattern's instructions. Although I will probably put this project aside for now since I don't need it finished any time soon.
